Everything that I am reading this morning says that Sarah Palin beat expectations. Which means that she wasn’t a deer in headlights. So, is that what we are looking for in a Vice President and potential President of the United States? Someone who “wasn’t as bad as we expected”?
In watching the beginning of the debate, I thought that they both appeared to be quite nervous and extremely scripted. When Joe Biden was talking, I found myself yawning. But then about 20 minutes in, he loosened up and we saw him come to life. I found him to be impassioned and inspiring. He talked specifics about their ticket’s plan for changes. He used facts, statistics, voting history, he showed me that he knew what he was talking about. I saw both the man and leader in him which is exactly what I am looking for. I see the same with Obama.
Palin on the other hand was an eye-winking, “aw-shucks” Alaskan hockey mom. I did not hear her get specific about ANYTHING. I did not hear her talk about their plans for change except spoken in broad sound bite terms. I am assuming that her team advised her to do that so that she could not misspeak and get caught on it. I wanted Gwen to say to her, “Can you please be specific about your plan?” And then she was asked about sub-prime mortgages and she answered the question by talking about her energy plan in Alaska. “Huh?!”
I know that I am not saying anything new here but I have to reiterate that I do not want someone in office that I can “relate” to. That does not inspire me to have the soccer mom who is standing next to me on the sidelines to know that she too can be President one day. I want the man or woman to be President who has been working for this their whole life. The person who has a long record of experience. I’ve been thinking this morning that maybe I am the one who is out of touch with America if what we are looking for is someone calls Americans “Joe-six-pack”, am I the only one who found that offensive?
I want change. I want specifics about how we are going to do that. I want us out of this Iraq war. I want Obama/Biden in the White House. “You betcha I do!” (eye wink)
